What is Silence?

It is said that when Pilate asked Jesus to speak of truth, Jesus remained silent. Rumi says that silence is the language of God, all else is a poor translation. The truth resides in silence. To be truly silent is not an easy job. There is too much noise with and without us. We have been used to noise. We tremble in front of silence. And we are not interested in going to the temple of silence. But silence is life. The noise is up there on the shore and the waves of the ocean of our being. Much silence and serenity lie with our being. This silence is not opposite to noise. We can feel and touch it. It is alive, vibrant and dynamic. Every noise and distortion just melt away in its presence. It is vast and deep. It is all around us. Perhaps that is reason we feel fear to go near to it. Perhaps deep down we know that we will stop existing if we do so. Look how awkward we feel during our conversations if the pause gets too long. Look how much we escape from it. What is it that we try to avoid through our meaningless talk and conversations? How much energy and resources we utilize not to encounter it? Creative expressions originate from silence. But we cannot sell it in the market. It cannot be commodified. Hence the value of expression. True creativity does not reside in the expression as the expression can be imitated. But one cannot immitate silence. One cannot be silent through practice. To be silent does not mean the lack of noise. It descends out of realization of one’s true being. What is the value of meaningless chatter and noise in front of the vastness and depth of our being? How much do we suffer due to the absence of silence in our lives? We yearn for peace and serenity and to achieve them we spend so much energy and resources to no avail. How unfortunate we are in not realizing that we already have them within our reach. Our true being is peaceful and serence by default. The eixstence is too generous and too grascious towards us to thank enough. We have structured our world in such a way that meaningless noise and chatter are given credit to. Mere survival has become our priority and we have not enough time and understanding to look beyond it.
